Purpose
The aim of this work is to improve literacy outcomes for adolescents with disabilities through the use of a set of evidence-based interventions to be implemented and scaled up in new secondary schools and school divisions.
Method
The centerpieces of this project will be the two models developed and validated at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning: the Strategic Instructional Model (SIM) and the Content Literacy Continuum (CLC). The scaling up of the initiative applies the lessons learned in the SIG in the creation of a protocol to implement with fidelity the CLC throughout Virginia to improve access to and success in the general curriculum for students with mild and moderate disabilities. The protocol will be applied by division-level administrators, with assistance of staff employed through the project, to implement the CLC in secondary schools in their division. The project will provide high-quality professional development in SIM to teachers, speech-language pathologists, administrators, and higher education faculty and continue to grow the number of professional developers in Virginia to build the State's capacity to successfully respond to the needs of adolescents with disabilities. The demonstration sites established through the current State improvement grant will be further developed and sustained to present the model to interested middle and high school and divisions around the State and will serve as laboratories for further knowledge in the CLC. Partnerships include technical assistance centers, Parent Training Centers, and the Partnership for People with Disabilities.
