Purpose
The mission of this project is to improve successful school completion by students with disabilities by: (a) increasing reading and math achievement at the middle and high school levels; (b) reducing dropouts; (c) increasing the percent of special education students who achieve their IEP transition goals; (d) increasing the percent of employed special education teachers holding full certification; and (e) increasing the percent of children transitioning to preschool with age-appropriate skills.


Method
The project will partner with other agencies, universities, parents, and regional/State/national resource centers to provide recruitment and training of special education teachers, scientifically-based intervention strategies, regionally/locally based coach training and onsite assistance, dropout prevention strategies, transition enhancements, family engagement activities, student achievement monitoring, and fidelity of implementation tracking. Four of the goal efforts will be implemented in 68 systems (high schools and their feeder intermediate schools), which will be divided into two cohorts of 34 systems each. Cohort One will start in 2007, Cohort Two in 2009.
