Purpose The project will provide scale-up, high-quality professional development, training, and technical assistance in scientific or evidence-based literacy instruction and positive behavioral supports; sustain and support personnel knowledge and skills gains through follow-up, wrap-around training and technical assistance, intensive coaching, and Web-based tools and communications; and enhance California's ability to recruit and retain high-quality special education teachers. Significant activities include: (a) professional development, training, and technical assistance in scientific or evidence-based interventions in literacy instruction and positive behavioral supports delivered to school teams of teachers, principals, administrators, related services personnel, paraprofessionals, and parent/families; (b) leadership in community collaboration between general and special education; (c) centrally coordinated technical assistance; (d) technological innovations, including databases and tools for decision making; (e) outreach and development of the Parent-School Involvement Facilitation Survey; (f) expansion of the capacity of the highly successful Cal State-LA education specialist credential intern program; and (g) improvement of a State-sponsored Web site to help recruit special education teachers. Products Anticipated products include: (a) 30 school teams trained in Effective Reading Intervention Academy (ERIA); (b) 50 school teams trained and supported in implementing the ERIA literacy program; (c) 30 school teams trained in positive behavior supports; (d) 120 school teams trained and supported in implementing the positive behavior supports program; (e) 28 existing leadership sites supported and sustained to improve special education services; (f) the participation of 25 schools/LEAs as Leadership Sites; and (g) 25 Regional Leadership Institutes to support general/special education collaboration.
